Were You There

3 04 2007

This Good Friday video was sent to me by our good friend Tom Balke. While in Quito, Ecuador he toured the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man). It is a huge building which houses some of the works of Oswaldo Guayasamin. The original paintings range from 4 ft. x 7 ft. to 25 ft. x 35 ft. Reading this blog and watching the reflection videos inspired him to take the se powerful photos and add the words of the hymn “Were You There?” There is no sound though I think that you will find as I did that just watching the video makes the words of the song reverberate in your mind. Thanks Tom for this wonderful contribution.

An Invitation to Journey

19 02 2007

Wednesday is the first day of Lent. We are looking forward to beginning our Lenten journey with you. Hopefully like us you will find an Anglican or Roman Catholic church that holds an Ash Wednesday service. This is a time for penitence and acknowledgement of our sins. Be prepared for the fact that during the service you will be marked on the forehead with a cross of ashes. as a sign of penitence and mortality. As the minister or priest marks each worshipper they will say “remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return”, or a similar phrase based on God’s sentence on Adam in Genesis 3:19. At some churches worshippers leave with the mark still on their forehead so that they carry the sign of the cross out into the world. At others the service ends with the ashes being washed off as a sign that the participants have been cleansed of their sins.
